The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
